Can you make a profit buying and selling Magic The Gathering cards?

I am looking for ways to buy and sell Magic: The Gathering cards. Is buying booster boxes, breaking them up, then selling the rares & uncommons on Ebay a good way to make a profit? Is buying older cards worth it? Is there a chance they will go up in value?
